🪵 Board and Batten Calculator
Calculate boards and battens needed for board and batten installation
How to Use This Calculator
Enter Wall Dimensions
Input the length and height of your wall in feet. Measure the total wall area where you'll be installing board and batten siding or wall treatment.
Specify Board Width
Select your board width in inches. Standard is 8 inches, but boards come in various widths (6, 8, 10, 12 inches). Wider boards cover more area with fewer pieces.
Set Batten Dimensions and Spacing
Select batten width (standard is 2.5 inches) and spacing (standard is 16 inches OC). Battens are narrow strips that cover joints between boards. Closer spacing uses more battens.
Calculate and Order
Click "Calculate Board and Batten" to see boards needed, number of battens, and linear feet. Add 10% extra for waste. Order boards and battens from lumber suppliers.
Formula
Wall Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Height (ft)
Number of Battens = Wall Length (inches) ÷ Batten Spacing (inches OC)
Batten Area = Batten Width × Height × Number of Battens
Board Area = Wall Area - Batten Area
Boards Needed = Board Area ÷ (Board Width × Height)
Example 1: Standard Wall (20 ft × 8 ft, 8" boards, 2.5" battens, 16" OC spacing)
Step 1: Calculate wall area: 20 × 8 = 160 sq ft
Step 2: Convert dimensions: 20 ft = 240 inches
Step 3: Calculate battens: 240 ÷ 16 = 15 battens
Step 4: Calculate batten area: (2.5/12) × 8 × 15 = 25 sq ft
Step 5: Calculate board area: 160 - 25 = 135 sq ft
Step 6: Calculate boards: 135 ÷ ((8/12) × 8) = 135 ÷ 5.33 = 26 boards
Step 7: Add waste: 26 × 1.10 = 29 boards (with 10% waste)
Example 2: Larger Wall (30 ft × 9 ft, 10" boards, 3" battens, 24" OC spacing)
Step 1: Calculate wall area: 30 × 9 = 270 sq ft
Step 2: Convert dimensions: 30 ft = 360 inches
Step 3: Calculate battens: 360 ÷ 24 = 15 battens
Step 4: Calculate batten area: (3/12) × 9 × 15 = 33.75 sq ft
Step 5: Calculate board area: 270 - 33.75 = 236.25 sq ft
Step 6: Calculate boards: 236.25 ÷ ((10/12) × 9) = 236.25 ÷ 7.5 = 32 boards

Common Applications
Exterior Siding: Homeowners and contractors planning board and batten exterior siding use this calculator to order the correct quantity of boards and battens. Standard board and batten uses 8-inch boards with 2.5-inch battens at 16-inch spacing, which this calculator helps determine accurately.
Interior Accent Walls: Homeowners and contractors planning board and batten interior wall treatments use this tool to estimate materials needed. Interior board and batten typically uses similar dimensions to exterior but may have different spacing preferences.
Barn-Style Siding: Contractors planning barn-style board and batten siding use this calculator to determine material quantities needed, ensuring sufficient materials are on-site before starting work.
Tips for Best Results
- Board Widths: Standard is 8 inches; wider boards (10-12") use fewer pieces but cost more
- Batten Widths: Standard is 2.5 inches; wider battens (3-4") are more prominent but use more material
- Batten Spacing: Standard is 16 inches OC; closer spacing (12") uses more battens, wider (24") uses fewer
- Add Waste: Always add 10% extra for waste, cuts, and mistakes during installation
- Order Together: Order all boards from the same batch for color consistency
Frequently Asked Questions
How many boards do I need for a 20×8 foot wall with board and batten?
For a 20×8 foot wall using 8-inch boards, 2.5-inch battens at 16-inch OC spacing, you'll need approximately 29 boards (with 10% waste) and 15 battens. Total board linear feet is about 232 feet, and batten linear feet is about 120 feet.
What is board and batten?
Board and batten is a siding/wall treatment style that uses wide vertical boards (boards) with narrow vertical strips (battens) covering the joints between boards. It creates a rustic, vertical paneled appearance popular for barns, farmhouses, and modern homes.
What spacing should I use for battens?
Standard batten spacing is 16 inches OC (on center), which is common for board and batten siding. Closer spacing (12 inches OC) creates more visual detail but uses more battens. Wider spacing (24 inches OC) uses fewer battens but less visual detail. Choose based on appearance preference.
Do I need to add extra boards for waste?
Yes! Always add 10% extra for waste, cuts around doors and windows, and mistakes during installation. If you need 26 boards, order about 29 boards (with 10% waste) to ensure you have enough material.
What size boards should I use for board and batten?
Standard board width is 8 inches for board and batten. Wider boards (10-12 inches) use fewer pieces but cost more. Narrower boards (6 inches) use more pieces but may look too busy. Choose based on appearance preference and budget.
Can I use board and batten indoors?
Yes! Board and batten is popular for interior accent walls, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Interior board and batten typically uses similar dimensions to exterior (8-inch boards, 2.5-inch battens, 16-inch spacing) but may be painted rather than left natural.
