🧱 Brick Calculator
Calculate bricks and mortar needed for your wall project
How to Use This Calculator
Enter Wall Dimensions
Input the length and height of your wall in feet. Measure the total length and height where you'll be installing bricks.
Specify Brick Size
Enter the length and height of your bricks in inches. Standard brick sizes are 8×2.25 inches (modular brick).
Set Mortar and Waste
Enter mortar joint thickness (usually 0.5 inches) and waste percentage (default 10%). Click "Calculate Bricks" to see results.
Formula
Wall Area (sq in) = Length (ft) × Height (ft) × 144
Brick Area = (Brick Length + Mortar) × (Brick Height + Mortar)
Bricks Needed = Wall Area ÷ Brick Area
Example: 20 ft × 8 ft wall with 8×2.25 inch bricks, 0.5 inch mortar
Step 1: Wall area = 20 × 8 × 144 = 23,040 sq in
Step 2: Brick area = (8 + 0.5) × (2.25 + 0.5) = 23.375 sq in
Step 3: Bricks needed = 23,040 ÷ 23.375 = 985 bricks
Step 4: With 10% waste = 985 × 1.10 = 1,084 bricks

Frequently Asked Questions
How many bricks do I need for a wall?
It depends on wall size and brick size. For a 20×8 ft wall with standard 8×2.25" bricks and 0.5" mortar, you need approximately 1,084 bricks (including 10% waste). Use the calculator with your specific dimensions for exact results.
What size are standard bricks?
Standard modular bricks are 8 inches long by 2.25 inches high. Always verify actual brick dimensions as they can vary by manufacturer.
Why add waste percentage?
Bricks break during cutting and installation. Adding 10-15% waste ensures you have enough bricks to complete your project. It also provides spare bricks for future matching repairs.
