🎨 Deck Stain Calculator

Calculate stain needed for deck staining projects

Height from deck floor to top of railings (optional)

How to Use This Calculator

1

Enter Deck Dimensions

Input the length and width of your deck in feet. Measure the deck floor area accurately for precise calculations.

2

Add Railings (if applicable)

Enter the height from deck floor to top of railings if you'll stain railings. This calculates the railing surface area that needs staining.

3

Include Stairs (if applicable)

Select "Yes" if you'll stain stairs and enter the number of steps. The calculator includes both tread (horizontal) and riser (vertical) areas for stairs.

4

Calculate and Order

Click "Calculate Stain" to see gallons needed and estimated cost. Select number of coats (typically 2). Add 10-15% extra for waste. Order stain by gallons.

Formula

Deck Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Railings Area (sq ft) = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height

Stairs Area (sq ft) = Number of Steps × 5.55 sq ft per step

Total Area = Deck Area + Railings Area + Stairs Area

Gallons Needed = (Total Area ÷ 250 sq ft/gal) × Number of Coats

Example 1: Standard Deck (20 ft × 12 ft, 3 ft railings, 2 coats)

Step 1: Deck area: 20 × 12 = 240 sq ft

Step 2: Railings area: 2 × (20 + 12) × 3 = 192 sq ft

Step 3: Total area: 240 + 192 = 432 sq ft

Step 4: Gallons needed: (432 ÷ 250) × 2 = 3.46 gallons (round up to 4)

Step 5: Estimated cost: 4 × $50 = $200

Example 2: Deck with Stairs (16 ft × 10 ft, 5 stairs, 2 coats)

Step 1: Deck area: 16 × 10 = 160 sq ft

Step 2: Stairs area: 5 × 5.55 = 27.75 sq ft

Step 3: Total area: 160 + 27.75 = 187.75 sq ft

Step 4: Gallons needed: (187.75 ÷ 250) × 2 = 1.5 gallons (round up to 2)

Frequently Asked Questions

How much stain do I need for a 20x12 deck?

For a 20×12 deck (240 sq ft) with 2 coats, you need approximately 2 gallons of stain. If you have railings, add more. Coverage varies by wood type and porosity, typically 200-300 sq ft per gallon. Add 10-15% extra for waste.

Do I need to include railings in calculations?

Yes! If you're staining railings, include them in calculations. Enter the height from deck floor to top of railings to calculate railing surface area. Railings add significant surface area that needs staining.

How many coats of stain should I apply?

Most decks require 2 coats for best protection and appearance. The first coat penetrates the wood, the second coat provides protection and color. Some high-quality stains may only need 1 coat, but 2 coats are typically recommended.

How much does deck stain coverage vary?

Stain coverage varies significantly by wood type (200-300 sq ft per gallon). Porous woods like cedar absorb more stain, while dense woods like pressure-treated pine need less. Always check manufacturer coverage rates for your specific product.

Should I add extra stain for waste?

Yes! Always add 10-15% extra for waste, spills, mistakes, and touch-ups during application. It's better to have extra than to run short mid-project. Round up to whole gallons when ordering.

What's the difference between stain and sealer?

Stain adds color and protection, while sealer only provides protection (clear or tinted). Many products combine both (stain-sealer). Use this calculator for stain, sealer, or stain-sealer products. Coverage rates are similar.
