3.0 inches on each side.

Add more if you plan to stretch or frame with mats.

How to Use This Calculator

1

Look up the stitch count

Read the pattern to find the number of stitches across and down.

2

Enter your fabric count

Use stitches per inch such as 14-count Aida, 16-count, or 32-count linen.

3

Add a border margin

Most stitchers add 2 to 3 inches on each side for finishing. Enter what you prefer.

4

Review the fabric size

Cut cloth to the recommended dimensions or round up to the next standard size.

Formula

Design width (inches) = stitch width divided by fabric count

Design height (inches) = stitch height divided by fabric count

Fabric cut width = design width + 2 x border

Fabric cut height = design height + 2 x border

Multiply inches by 2.54 to convert to centimeters.

Example: 120 by 180 stitches on 14-count fabric with a 3 inch border gives a design of 8.57 by 12.86 inches and a fabric cut of 14.57 by 18.86 inches.

Full Description

Planning fabric size ahead of time prevents shortages and ensures enough margin for framing, finishing, or hoop displays. This calculator removes the guesswork by converting stitches to real-world dimensions instantly.

Adjust the border value to match the finishing method. Add extra allowance if you plan to lace the work on foam core, stretch it around a canvas, or use a mat with a deep reveal.

Use the results while shopping to confirm that fabric in your stash is large enough or to order the right cut from a needlework shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I stitch over two threads?

Divide the fabric count by two before entering it. For example, 32-count linen over two threads is effectively 16 stitches per inch.

Can I work in centimeters?

Enter the values in inches and use the centimeter outputs, or convert your measurements to inches by dividing by 2.54 first.

How much border should I add?

Two to three inches on each side covers most framing. Increase to four or more inches for gallery wraps or deep mats.

Does this work for needlepoint canvas?

Yes. Use the mesh count in place of fabric count. The same division and border math applies.

Do I need to press Calculate?

No button is required. Results update automatically as you change the inputs.
