Miles to Dollars Calculator

Convert any driving distance into a realistic trip cost by combining fuel consumption, maintenance allowances, and extra fees.

Covers tires, oil, depreciation, insurance, and repairs per mile.

How to Use This Calculator

1

Enter the total miles you plan to drive

Use one-way or round-trip miles depending on what you want to price out.

2

Specify fuel economy and fuel price

Real-world MPG and local pump price produce accurate fuel cost estimates.

3

Add a per-mile allowance

Include depreciation, tire wear, insurance, and maintenance. Many reimbursements use $0.655/mile (IRS 2023).

4

Account for tolls and parking

Add fixed costs so your total reflects every dollar the trip will require.

Formula

Total Cost = (Miles ÷ MPG × Fuel Price) + (Miles × Maintenance $/mile) + Tolls

Example: 750 miles, 27 mpg, $3.85/gal, $0.12/mile maintenance, $35 tolls:

Fuel needed = 750 ÷ 27 = 27.78 gal; Fuel cost = 27.78 × 3.85 = $107.02

Maintenance = 750 × 0.12 = $90.00

Total = 107.02 + 90.00 + 35 = $232.02 → Cost per mile = $0.31

Frequently Asked Questions

What maintenance rate should I use?

The U.S. IRS standard mileage rate (65.5¢/mile for 2023) bundles fuel, maintenance, and depreciation. If you only want maintenance, use 10–20¢ per mile depending on your vehicle.

Does this work for electric vehicles?

You can enter an equivalent $/mile maintenance cost and convert electricity cost to an effective fuel price. For precise EV numbers, use our EV charging calculator.

How do I handle round trips?

Enter the total miles you plan to drive. For round trips, double the one-way distance before calculating.

Can I add hotel or meal costs?

This calculator focuses on vehicle operating costs. Add other travel expenses manually to the final total for a fully comprehensive budget.
