Picture Frame Calculator
Input artwork size, mat border, and frame moulding width to get precise cut dimensions and framing stats.
Mat opening: 10.75 in × 13.75 in (subtract 1/8" overlap)
Mat outer size: 15.00 in × 18.00 in
Frame outer size: 18.00 in × 21.00 in
Artwork aspect ratio: 0.79 : 1
Artwork area: 154.0 in²
Mat board area: 116.0 in² (excluding opening)
Frame moulding length needed: 78.0 linear inches (~6.50 ft)
How to Use This Calculator
Measure your art
Use a metal ruler for precision. Note the exact width and height of the artwork or print.
Choose mat and frame widths
Pick a mat reveal (e.g., 2") and moulding width to complement your design.
Cut materials confidently
Use the output to order custom frames, pre-cut mat boards, or DIY your own builds.
Formula
Mat Opening = Artwork Size − 0.25"
Mat Outer = Artwork Size + (2 × Mat Border)
Frame Outer = Mat Outer + (2 × Frame Width)
Frame Perimeter = 2 × (Frame Outer Width + Frame Outer Height)
Example: 11" × 14" art, 2" mat, 1.5" frame → Mat outer 15" × 18", Frame outer 18" × 21" → 78" moulding needed.
Framing Tips
- Use acid-free mat board for archival prints.
- Consider bottom-weighted mats (add 0.25") for visual balance.
- Order extra moulding to account for mitre cuts (add ~10%).
- Pair this calculator with glass size (same as frame outer) when ordering glazing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why subtract 1/8" from the mat opening?
It hides the art edges and prevents sagging. Most framers cut the window slightly smaller than the art.
Can I set different mat borders per side?
This version assumes equal borders. For bottom weights, add 0.25" to the mat border and adjust manually.
How do I convert to metric?
Enter inches and convert manually (1 in = 2.54 cm). Metric support is coming soon!
Does moulding width affect glass size?
No. Glass size equals the mat outer size. Frame outer adds the visible moulding width for ordering wood lengths.
