Roll Length Calculator

Measure roll diameters and thickness to estimate remaining material length, coverage area, and roll weight.

Use calipers for accurate diameter and thickness measurements.

Optional. Leave default for paper (~0.035).

How to Use This Calculator

1

Measure diameters accurately

Use calipers or a flexible tape to measure the outer diameter and core diameter of the roll.

2

Enter thickness and width

Input the single ply thickness and the roll width. Convert gauge or mil values to inches or millimeters.

3

Check length and area

Review the totals to plan production runs, quotes, or shipping weight.

Formula

Length = (π × (OD² − ID²)) ÷ (4 × Thickness)

Layers ≈ (OD − ID) ÷ (2 × Thickness)

Example: OD 10 in, ID 3 in, thickness 0.003 in → Length ≈ 24,100 in ≈ 2,008 ft.

Metric example: OD 250 mm, ID 76 mm, thickness 0.05 mm → Length ≈ 19.5 m.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the estimate exact?

It is very accurate for tightly wound rolls. Expect minor variance if the roll includes splices or voids.

Can I use mil thickness values?

Yes. Divide mils by 1000 to convert to inches, or multiply mils by 0.0254 to get millimeters.

Does this work for fabric or cable?

Any uniformly wound material works, including textiles, films, wire, or coated papers.

How do I improve accuracy?

Measure thickness at multiple points, average the values, and re-measure after cutting to refine calculations.
