Speed Calculator

Solve classic motion problems instantly: compute speed from distance and time, or reverse the equation to find distance or travel time.

How to Use This Calculator

1

Pick what you want to solve for

Choose “Find Speed,” “Find Distance,” or “Find Time” depending on the unknown.

2

Enter the known values

Fill in distance (miles), time (hours and minutes), or speed (mph). Use decimals when needed.

3

Press calculate

We apply the distance = speed × time equation to deliver the missing value.

4

Review metric and imperial outputs

The results show both miles and kilometers, hours and formatted hh:mm to fit any context.

Formula

Speed = Distance ÷ Time

Distance = Speed × Time

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Example: 120 miles in 2 hours 15 minutes (2.25 hours):

Speed = 120 ÷ 2.25 = 53.33 mph → 85.8 km/h

Time to travel 200 miles at 65 mph = 200 ÷ 65 = 3.08 hours → 3h 5m

Distance at 55 mph for 1h 20m (1.333 h) = 55 × 1.333 = 73.3 miles

About the Speed Calculator

When to Use This Calculator

  • Travel planning: Estimate arrival times or how far you can drive before a meeting.
  • Running & cycling: Convert pace goals into speed or distance targets.
  • Logistics & delivery: Calculate route timing and average speed requirements.
  • Education: Demonstrate physics concepts or solve homework problems.

Why Use Our Calculator?

  • Flexible modes: Compute speed, distance, or time without switching tools.
  • Mixed units friendly: Outputs both imperial and metric results instantly.
  • Clean interface: Enter just what you know—no cluttered forms.
  • Mobile ready: Perfect for planning on the go.

Common Applications

Ride-sharing drivers: Estimate required speeds to meet deadlines.

Hikers: Determine trail completion times from pace.

Teachers: Reinforce the distance-speed-time triangle with interactive demos.

Tips for Best Results

  • Account for traffic or rest stops by adding buffer time to the result.
  • For variable speeds, break the trip into segments and sum each portion separately.
  • When measuring distance outdoors, use GPS data for higher accuracy.
  • Remember that average speed differs from top speed—use realistic averages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter kilometers instead of miles?

Enter distance in miles for now and convert with the results (km shown automatically). Future updates may add native metric input.

Does the calculator handle seconds?

You can enter fractional minutes (e.g. 0.5 minutes for 30 seconds). We round the formatted time to the nearest minute.

How accurate are the results?

Calculations are exact based on your inputs. Real-world factors—traffic, terrain, wind—may change actual travel times.

Can I calculate pace (minutes per mile)?

Yes. Enter your distance and time to compute speed, then convert to pace: Pace = 60 ÷ speed (mph) for minutes per mile.
