DUDIT score

0

Range 0–44

Interpretation

No indication of hazardous drug use

Continue monitoring. Reinforce healthy coping strategies and avoidance of illicit substances.

High scores warrant assessment for specific substances (opioids, stimulants, sedatives), overdose risk, withdrawal management, and comorbid mental health conditions.

How to Use This Calculator

1

Screen all non-alcohol substances

Include illicit drugs and prescription medications used off-label or above prescribed doses.

2

Answer based on the past 12 months

Capture intermittent binge use, polydrug episodes, and injection or inhalation practices.

3

Plan follow-up care

Positive screens should trigger detailed assessment, harm reduction planning, and connection to treatment services.

Formula

Total DUDIT score = Sum of item scores (items 1–9 scored 0–4, items 10–11 scored 0, 2, or 4)

Cut-offs:

  • Men: ≥6 indicates hazardous use
  • Women: ≥2 indicates hazardous use
  • ≥25 suggests probable dependence

Full Description

The DUDIT questionnaire extends alcohol screening to other psychoactive substances. It measures consumption, dependence symptoms, and harm. Use results with urine drug screens, clinical interviews, and mental health assessments. Tailor interventions—harm reduction, medication-assisted treatment, behavioural therapy—based on the substance (opioids, stimulants, benzodiazepines, cannabis) and severity. Integrate with overdose prevention (naloxone), infectious disease screening, and social support services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use DUDIT for prescription misuse?

Yes. Include painkillers, stimulants, sedatives taken without prescription or in higher doses than prescribed.

Is there a version for adolescents?

DUDIT-E is an extended version for adolescents. Standard DUDIT is validated for adults.

What about combined alcohol and drug use?

Use AUDIT alongside DUDIT to capture polydrug use. Address synergistic overdose risks (e.g., alcohol + opioids).

How often should I repeat DUDIT?

Repeat during treatment to monitor progress (monthly or quarterly). Early improvements often show reduced frequency scores.
