🏗️ Metal Roof Cost Calculator
Calculate metal roofing costs and materials needed
How to Use This Calculator
Enter Roof Dimensions
Input the roof length and width in feet. These are the overall dimensions of the roof structure.
Enter Roof Pitch
Input the roof pitch in inches per 12 inches of run. For example, enter "6" for a 6/12 pitch.
Select Metal Type and Options
Choose the metal type (galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, etc.) and whether to include installation and underlayment.
Calculate and Review
Click "Calculate Cost" to see total cost, material costs, installation costs, and cost breakdown. Use this for budgeting and planning.
Formula
Roof Area = 2 × Rafter Length × Roof Length
Rafter Length = √(Run² + Rise²)
Material Cost = (Roof Area × 1.10) × (Metal Cost/sq ft + Underlayment + Accessories)
Total Cost = Material Cost + Installation Cost
Example: 40 ft × 30 ft roof, 6/12 pitch, galvanized steel, with installation
Step 1: Rafter length = √(15² + 7.5²) = 16.77 feet
Step 2: Roof area = 2 × 16.77 × 40 = 1,342 sq ft
Step 3: With waste (10%): 1,342 × 1.10 = 1,476 sq ft
Step 4: Material cost = 1,476 × ($3.50 + $0.50 + $0.75) = $7,011
Step 5: Installation = 1,342 × $6 = $8,052
Step 6: Total cost = $7,011 + $8,052 = $15,063

Understanding Metal Roof Costs
Material Costs: Metal roofing costs vary significantly by metal type. Galvanized steel is the most economical ($3-5/sq ft), while copper is premium ($12-15/sq ft). Costs include panels, underlayment, fasteners, and accessories.
Installation Costs: Installation typically costs $4-8 per square foot depending on roof pitch, complexity, and location. Steeper roofs and complex designs cost more. Installation includes labor, equipment, and safety measures.
Total Costs: Total metal roofing costs typically range from $7-20 per square foot depending on metal type and installation complexity. Premium metals like copper can cost $20-30 per square foot installed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a metal roof cost?
Metal roofing costs typically range from $7-20 per square foot installed, depending on metal type and complexity. Galvanized steel costs $7-10/sq ft installed, while copper costs $20-30/sq ft installed. Material costs range from $3-12/sq ft, plus $4-8/sq ft for installation.
Which metal type is most economical?
Galvanized steel is typically the most economical ($3-5/sq ft material, $7-10/sq ft installed). Aluminum is moderate ($5-7/sq ft material), while copper is premium ($12-15/sq ft material). Consider longevity and appearance when choosing.
How much does metal roof installation cost?
Installation typically costs $4-8 per square foot depending on roof pitch, complexity, and location. Steeper roofs and complex designs cost more. The calculator includes installation costs based on roof pitch.
Is a metal roof worth the cost?
Metal roofs cost more upfront than asphalt shingles but last 40-70 years (vs 15-25 years for shingles). They require minimal maintenance, are energy efficient, and can increase home value. Consider long-term benefits when evaluating cost.
Do these costs include everything?
The calculator includes materials (panels, underlayment, fasteners) and installation. It doesn't include permits, old roof removal, structural modifications, or specialty features. Always get detailed quotes from contractors for complete costs.
