ACT Composite Score Formula

The ACT reports each section score on a scale of 1 to 36. Your composite score is the rounded average of the four required sections. The official formula looks like this:

Composite Score = round((English + Math + Reading + Science) ÷ 4)

The ACT rounds .5 and higher up to the next whole number. Example: section scores of 24, 25, 23, and 21 yield an average of 23.3, which rounds down to a composite 23. Scores of 24, 26, 25, and 23 yield 24.5, which rounds up to 25.

Full Description

Preparing for the ACT requires more than memorizing content. Understanding how your section scores combine into a composite number helps you set realistic score goals and build a smart study plan. The ReadyCalculator ACT Score Calculator mirrors the official scoring process so you always know where you stand before test day.

Use this tool to diagnose strengths and weaknesses. If your Math score lags behind the composite, dedicate more time to targeted drill sets. If Reading carries your composite, keep that momentum while closing gaps in Science reasoning or English grammar. Balanced scores are the easiest path to higher composites, but a strategic sectional boost can move your average faster than hours of unfocused practice.

Combine the calculator with timed practice tests, official ACT resources, and an error log. Track how incremental improvements in each section affect the composite so you can celebrate small wins and stay motivated as you approach your target score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ACT composite score?

A composite score of 24 or higher places you above the national average and meets most college readiness benchmarks. Scores of 28+ are considered competitive for selective universities, while 32+ aligns with top-tier admission statistics.

How is the ACT composite score calculated?

Your ACT composite score is the average of your English, Math, Reading, and Science section scores. The ACT rounds this average to the nearest whole number. For example, an average of 23.5 becomes a 24.

Can superscoring change my ACT composite?

Yes. Superscoring recomputes your composite score by combining your best section scores across multiple test dates. Many colleges now accept superscores because it better reflects your peak performance in each subject.

Does the optional ACT Writing test affect my composite score?

The optional Writing (essay) score is reported separately on a 2–12 scale and does not change your composite score. Some schools may still review the Writing score, so check each college’s testing policy.
