Dimensional Weight Calculator

Calculate dimensional (volumetric) weight for shipping. Carriers charge based on dimensional weight or actual weight, whichever is greater.

US: 139, International: 166, FedEx: 139, UPS: 139

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter package length, width, and height.
  2. Select dimension unit (inches, cm, or meters).
  3. Optionally enter actual weight to see chargeable weight.
  4. Select weight unit (lbs or kg) and dimensional divisor (139 for US, 166 for international).
  5. The calculator displays dimensional weight and chargeable weight.

Dimensional Weight Formula

Dimensional weight is calculated from package volume:

Dimensional Weight = (Length × Width × Height) / Divisor
Chargeable Weight = max(Dimensional Weight, Actual Weight)

Example: Package 12" × 10" × 8" = 960 in³. Dimensional Weight = 960 / 139 = 6.91 lbs. If actual weight is 5 lbs, chargeable = 6.91 lbs (dimensional). If actual weight is 10 lbs, chargeable = 10 lbs (actual).

Full Description

Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight) is a pricing method used by shipping carriers to charge based on package volume rather than actual weight. This ensures fair pricing for lightweight, bulky packages that take up valuable space. Carriers charge based on the greater of dimensional weight or actual weight, ensuring they're compensated appropriately regardless of package characteristics.

Dimensional weight is calculated by dividing package volume by a divisor. The divisor varies by carrier and region: US domestic carriers (FedEx, UPS) typically use 139 (for inches and pounds), while international shipping often uses 166. The result is compared to actual weight, and the higher value is used for pricing. This encourages efficient packaging and prevents carriers from losing money on bulky, lightweight shipments.

This calculator helps you determine dimensional weight and chargeable weight. Enter package dimensions and optionally actual weight, and it calculates dimensional weight and which weight will be charged. Use it to estimate shipping costs, optimize packaging, understand carrier pricing, or plan shipments. Understanding dimensional weight helps you avoid unexpected shipping costs!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight (volumetric weight) is a pricing technique used by carriers to charge based on package volume rather than actual weight. It accounts for the space a package occupies. Carriers charge based on dimensional weight or actual weight, whichever is greater.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

Dimensional Weight = (Length × Width × Height) / Divisor. US domestic: Divisor = 139 (for inches and lbs). International: Divisor = 166. Example: 12" × 10" × 8" = 960 in³, Dimensional Weight = 960 / 139 = 6.91 lbs.

What divisor should I use?

US domestic (FedEx, UPS): 139. International shipping: 166. Some carriers use different divisors. Check with your carrier for exact divisor. The calculator defaults to 139 (US standard).

Why do carriers use dimensional weight?

Carriers use dimensional weight to ensure fair pricing. Lightweight, bulky packages take up valuable space but weigh little. Dimensional weight pricing ensures carriers are compensated for the space occupied, not just weight. This encourages efficient packaging.
