How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your current course average. If unsure, total your graded points earned and divide by total points possible so far.
  2. Type the grade you want to finish with (for example, 90 for an A- or 85 for a B).
  3. Enter the percentage weight of the final exam or project. This should match your syllabus.
  4. Press “Calculate” to see the minimum exam score required. Use “Clear” to start a new scenario.

Final Grade Formula

The final grade formula separates your current coursework average from the final exam contribution:

Required Final Score = [Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)] ÷ Final Weight

Final weight is expressed as a decimal (30% = 0.30). If the required score is negative, you've already locked in the target grade. If it exceeds 100%, your desired grade isn't mathematically attainable without extra credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as my current grade?

Use the grade currently listed in your learning management system or syllabus tracker. Include all graded assignments that will remain in the final average. If upcoming homework or quizzes are still pending, estimate conservatively or wait until grades post.

How do I find the weight of the final exam?

Check your course syllabus or ask your instructor. Finals commonly range from 20–40% of the total grade, but capstone courses or labs may weigh the final differently.

What if the required score is over 100%?

A score above 100% means your target grade isn’t possible without extra credit or grading adjustments. Use the result to set a realistic backup goal or focus on available bonus assignments.

Does the calculator support multiple finals or project components?

Yes. Treat each major assessment separately and adjust the “final weight” to the percentage that assessment contributes. For multi-part finals, calculate each component individually and average the results.
