HP Calculator 5e – Dungeons & Dragons

Calculate hit points for D&D 5th Edition characters. Determine HP based on class, level, and Constitution modifier.

Leave empty to use average HP

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your character class.
  2. Enter your level (1-20).
  3. Enter your Constitution score.
  4. Optionally enter hit dice rolls for levels 2+ (comma-separated).
  5. The calculator displays total HP, hit die, and CON modifier.

HP Calculation Formula

HP is calculated from class, level, and Constitution:

Level 1: HP = Max Hit Die + CON Modifier
Levels 2+: HP = (Hit Die / 2) + 1 + CON Modifier (average)
Or: HP = Hit Die Roll + CON Modifier (rolled)

CON Modifier = floor((CON Score - 10) / 2)

Hit Dice by Class:
d12: Barbarian
d10: Fighter, Paladin, Ranger
d8: Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Bard, Warlock
d6: Sorcerer, Wizard

Example: Fighter (d10), Level 5, CON 14 (+2): Level 1 = 10 + 2 = 12 HP. Levels 2-5 = 4 × (5 + 1 + 2) = 32 HP. Total = 44 HP. The calculator uses average HP unless you provide hit dice rolls.

Full Description

The HP Calculator 5e calculates hit points for D&D 5th Edition characters based on class, level, and Constitution modifier. Hit points represent a character\'s health and ability to withstand damage. Each class has a different hit die (d6 to d12), which determines HP gained per level. Constitution modifier is added to HP at every level, making CON an important ability score for all characters.

At level 1, characters get maximum hit die value plus CON modifier. For levels 2+, characters gain HP equal to average (hit die / 2 + 1 + CON modifier) or rolled (hit die roll + CON modifier). The calculator uses average HP by default, but you can enter hit dice rolls if you prefer rolling. Hit dice vary by class: Barbarians use d12, Fighters/Paladins/Rangers use d10, most classes use d8, and Sorcerers/Wizards use d6.

This calculator helps you determine character HP. Enter class, level, and Constitution, and it calculates total HP, hit die, and CON modifier. Use it for character creation, leveling up, understanding HP mechanics, or planning character builds. Remember, higher CON means more HP at every level!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is HP calculated in D&D 5e?

Level 1: Max hit die + CON modifier. Levels 2+: Average (hit die / 2 + 1 + CON modifier) or rolled (hit die roll + CON modifier). Example: Fighter (d10), CON 14 (+2), Level 5: Level 1 = 10 + 2 = 12 HP. Levels 2-5 = 4 × (5 + 1 + 2) = 32 HP. Total = 44 HP.

What are hit dice by class?

d12: Barbarian. d10: Fighter, Paladin, Ranger. d8: Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Bard, Warlock. d6: Sorcerer, Wizard. Hit dice determine HP per level. Higher hit dice = more HP per level.

Should I use average or rolled HP?

Average is recommended for consistency and faster character creation. Average = (Hit Die / 2) + 1 + CON modifier. Rolling is more random but can be fun. If you roll, you can't go below average on a bad roll (optional rule).

How does Constitution affect HP?

CON modifier is added to HP at every level. CON 10-11 = +0, CON 12-13 = +1, CON 14-15 = +2, etc. Higher CON = more HP. CON is important for all classes, especially front-line fighters who take more damage.
