IELTS Band Score Formula

The overall IELTS band score is calculated by averaging the four component scores and rounding to the nearest half-band:

Overall Band = round((Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4)

Example: If your scores are 7.5 (Listening), 8.0 (Reading), 7.0 (Writing), and 7.5 (Speaking), the average is 7.5, giving you an overall band score of 7.5. If the average were 7.25, it would round up to 7.5.

Full Description

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world's most recognized English proficiency tests. Your IELTS score consists of four component scores—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—each scored from 0.0 to 9.0 in half-band increments. The overall band score is the average of these four components, rounded to the nearest half-band.

IELTS scores are used by universities, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide to assess English language ability. Most academic institutions require an overall band score of 6.0 to 7.5, while professional organizations may have different requirements. Understanding how your component scores combine into an overall band helps you set realistic improvement goals.

This calculator provides instant feedback on your IELTS performance, helping you understand where you stand and what scores you need to achieve your target band. Use it to track progress during test preparation or to verify scores from your official Test Report Form.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?

The overall band score is the average of your four component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half-band. For example, if your scores are 7.0, 7.5, 6.5, and 7.0, the average is 7.0 (28 ÷ 4 = 7.0).

What is a good IELTS score?

Scores of 7.0 or higher are considered good and meet requirements for most universities and professional organizations. Band 8.0-9.0 is excellent and demonstrates near-native proficiency. Most institutions require 6.0-7.0 for admission.

How are IELTS scores rounded?

IELTS uses half-band increments (0.5). If your average ends in .25, it rounds up to .5. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole number. For example, 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.

Can I retake individual IELTS components?

No, you must retake the entire IELTS test if you want to improve your score. However, some institutions may accept your best score from multiple test attempts if taken within a certain timeframe. Check with your target institution.
