NaNoWriMo Progress Formula
Progress and goals are calculated from word counts:
Words Remaining = Target - Current
Daily Goal = Words Remaining / Days Remaining
Average Daily Goal = Target / 30 days
Example: 15,000 words written, 50,000 target, 15 days left: Progress = 30%. Words Remaining = 35,000. Daily Goal = 35,000 / 15 = 2,333 words/day. Average daily goal = 50,000 / 30 = 1,667 words/day. If daily goal > 1.5× average, you\'re behind schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is an annual challenge to write a 50,000-word novel in November (30 days). That's about 1,667 words per day. The goal is to write a complete first draft, not a polished novel. Many participants use the challenge to start or finish novels.
How do I calculate daily word goals?
Daily Goal = Words Remaining / Days Remaining. Example: 15,000 words written, 50,000 target, 15 days left: Daily = 35,000 / 15 = 2,333 words/day. If you're behind, you'll need to write more per day to catch up. The calculator shows your daily goal based on progress.
What if I fall behind?
If you fall behind, increase your daily word count. The calculator shows if you're "Behind Schedule" (need >1.5× average), "Catching Up" (need 1.2-1.5× average), or "On Track" (normal pace). You can catch up by writing more on weekends or increasing daily output. Don't give up!
Can I change my target?
Yes! While 50,000 is the standard NaNoWriMo goal, you can set any target. Some writers aim for 25,000 (half), 75,000 (more ambitious), or custom goals. The calculator works with any target. Adjust based on your schedule, experience, and goals.
