🧱 Paver Calculator

Calculate pavers needed for your patio or walkway

How to Use This Calculator

1

Enter Area Dimensions

Input the length and width of your patio, walkway, or driveway area in feet. Measure the total area where you'll be installing pavers.

2

Specify Paver Size

Select your paver length and width in inches. Common sizes are 12×12 inches, 16×16 inches, or rectangular sizes like 6×12 inches. Check your paver product specifications.

3

Calculate Pavers Needed

Click "Calculate Pavers" to see the total number of pavers needed. The calculator automatically includes 10% waste for cuts, pattern matching, and mistakes.

4

Order Materials

Use the paver count to order from suppliers. Also order base material (4-6 inches of gravel/sand), leveling sand, and joint sand. Order all pavers from the same batch for color consistency.

Formula

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Paver Area (sq ft) = (Paver Length (in) ÷ 12) × (Paver Width (in) ÷ 12)

Pavers Needed = Area (sq ft) ÷ Paver Area (sq ft)

Pavers to Order = Pavers Needed × 1.10 (includes 10% waste)

Example 1: Standard Patio (20 ft × 15 ft, 12×12 inch pavers)

Step 1: Calculate area: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft

Step 2: Convert paver size: (12 ÷ 12) × (12 ÷ 12) = 1 × 1 = 1 sq ft per paver

Step 3: Calculate pavers: 300 ÷ 1 = 300 pavers

Step 4: Add waste: 300 × 1.10 = 330 pavers (with 10% waste)

Example 2: Walkway (30 ft × 3 ft, 6×12 inch pavers)

Step 1: Calculate area: 30 × 3 = 90 sq ft

Step 2: Convert paver size: (6 ÷ 12) × (12 ÷ 12) = 0.5 × 1 = 0.5 sq ft per paver

Step 3: Calculate pavers: 90 ÷ 0.5 = 180 pavers

Step 4: Add waste: 180 × 1.10 = 198 pavers (with 10% waste)

Common Applications

Residential Patios: Homeowners planning new patios or replacing existing ones use this calculator to order the correct quantity of pavers. Standard patios use 12×12 inch pavers, which this calculator helps determine accurately.

Walkways and Pathways: Landscapers and homeowners planning walkways use this tool to estimate paver quantities needed. Walkways often use rectangular pavers (6×12 inches) for better pattern options.

Commercial Projects: Contractors working on commercial paver projects use this calculator to determine paver quantities needed for large areas, ensuring sufficient materials are on-site before starting work.

Tips for Best Results

  • Paver Sizes: Standard is 12×12 inches; larger pavers (16×16, 18×18) reduce installation time
  • Add Waste: Always add 10% extra for waste, cuts around edges, and pattern matching
  • Base Material: Plan for 4-6 inches of base material (gravel/sand) under pavers
  • Leveling Sand: Add 1 inch of leveling sand on top of base material
  • Joint Sand: Order joint sand separately for filling gaps between pavers

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pavers do I need for a 20×15 foot patio with 12×12 inch pavers?

A 20×15 foot patio (300 sq ft) using 12×12 inch pavers requires approximately 330 pavers (including 10% waste). Without waste, you'd need 300 pavers, but always add 10% for cuts and mistakes.

What size pavers are best for patios?

Standard patio pavers are 12×12 inches—good balance of cost and installation speed. Larger pavers (16×16, 18×18) install faster but cost more. Smaller pavers (6×6) are cheaper but take longer to install. Choose based on budget and appearance preference.

Do I need to add extra pavers for waste?

Yes! Always add 10% extra for waste, cuts around edges and corners, pattern matching, and mistakes. If you need 300 pavers, order about 330 pavers (with 10% waste) to ensure you have enough material.

How much base material do I need under pavers?

Standard paver installation requires 4-6 inches of base material (crushed stone or gravel) plus 1 inch of leveling sand. For a 300 sq ft patio, you'll need approximately 12-18 cubic yards of base material (4-6 inches deep) plus 1 cubic yard of sand.

How much does a paver cost?

Paver prices vary by material and size: concrete pavers $0.50-$2.00 each, brick pavers $1-$3 each, natural stone pavers $3-$10+ each. Prices depend on material, size, and brand. Budget pavers are cheaper; premium materials cost more.

Can I calculate pavers for an irregular shape?

Divide irregular areas into rectangles, calculate each separately, then add the paver counts together. For circular areas, use π × radius² for area calculation. Add 15-20% extra for irregular shapes due to increased waste.
