Pneumatic Cylinder Force Calculator

Calculate ideal forces with optional friction allowance.

How to Use This Calculator

1

Enter pressure

Gauge supply pressure in pascals (Pa).

2

Enter bore and rod

Rod diameter is only used for retraction force.

3

Optionally add friction

Subtracts a constant allowance from both directions.

Formula

Fext = P · (π D²/4) − Ff, Fret = P · (π (D² − d²)/4) − Ff

Where: P is pressure, D bore diameter, d rod diameter, Ff friction allowance.

Example: P=0.6 MPa, D=0.05 m, d=0.02 m ⇒ Fext≈1178 N, Fret≈ 942 N (without friction).

Frequently Asked Questions

Gauge vs absolute pressure?

Use gauge pressure relative to atmosphere since opposing side is typically vented.

Units?

Inputs are SI; results are in newtons.
