How to Use This Calculator
Choose a passage
Pick a text of at least 400 words. Count the words or use a tool to get an exact number.
Time yourself
Read naturally with a timer. Stop when done and enter minutes and seconds.
Assess comprehension
Answer questions or summarize the text, then estimate your comprehension percentage.
Formula
Total Minutes = Minutes + (Seconds ÷ 60)
Words per Minute = Words ÷ Total Minutes
Adjusted WPM = Raw WPM × (Comprehension ÷ 100)
Example: 450 words in 5m 30s → 5.5 minutes → 81.8 WPM. At 85% comprehension → 69.5 adjusted WPM.
