How to Use This Calculator

1

Collect passing stats

Use official box scores or advanced stat services to gather attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions.

2

Choose the rating formula

NFL rating caps components between 0.0 and 2.375. NCAA formula is linear and produces higher numbers.

3

Analyze efficiency metrics

Review completion percentage, yards per attempt, and touchdown/interception rates to contextualize the rating.

4

Compare against benchmarks

Use the qualitative labels to gauge where the performance stands relative to pro or collegiate averages.

Formula

NFL Passer Rating

Components capped between 0.0 and 2.375:
a = ((Comp / Att) − 0.3) × 5
b = ((Yds / Att) − 3) × 0.25
c = (TD / Att) × 20
d = 2.375 − ((INT / Att) × 25)

Rating = ((a + b + c + d) ÷ 6) × 100   (Range 0.0 – 158.3)

NCAA Passer Rating

Rating = (8.4 × Yds + 330 × TD + 100 × Comp − 200 × INT) ÷ Att

NFL rating compresses values to compare seasons across eras; NCAA rating inflates due to scheme differences. Use each metric within its respective league context.

Quarterback Performance Tips

Passer rating is highly sensitive to completion percentage and turnovers. Improving decision-making and accuracy can yield rapid rating gains.

Boost rating

  • Prioritize quick-game concepts to raise completion percentage.
  • Incorporate play-action and shot plays to increase yards per attempt.
  • Minimize turnovers through structured reads and checkdowns.

Contextual metrics

  • Air yards and completion probability provide deeper insights beyond raw rating.
  • EPA/play and success rate align passer performance with down & distance context.
  • Pressure-to-sack ratio reveals how well a QB manages collapsing pockets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a perfect passer rating?

In the NFL, a perfect game is 158.3 (min 10 attempts). NCAA ratings can exceed 300 in single games.

Why does the NFL formula cap components?

Caps prevent a single outlier stat from dominating the rating and normalize across eras.

Does rushing affect passer rating?

No. Passer rating only evaluates passing plays. Use passer efficiency plus rushing metrics for dual-threat QBs.

Is passer rating a good predictor of wins?

It correlates with offensive success but doesn’t capture situational football. Combine it with EPA or QBR for better prediction.

How do sacks factor in?

They do not. Use adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A) to incorporate sacks and fumbles.
