💥 Slugging Percentage Calculator

Evaluate power hitting by measuring total bases produced per at-bat.

How to Use This Calculator

1

Gather Hit Totals

Collect season or game totals for singles, doubles, triples, and home runs.

2

Enter At-Bats

Use official at-bats (exclude walks, HBP, sacrifices).

3

Run the Calculation

Click the button to calculate total bases and slugging percentage.

4

Assess Power Profile

Compare SLG to benchmarks to understand how impactful the hitter is.

Formula

SLG = Total Bases ÷ At-Bats = (1×1B + 2×2B + 3×3B + 4×HR) ÷ AB

Slugging percentage weights extra-base hits by the number of bases gained. Singles count once, doubles twice, triples three times, and home runs four times. Divide by at-bats to see bases per opportunity.

Variables

  • 1B: Singles
  • 2B: Doubles
  • 3B: Triples
  • HR: Home runs
  • AB: At-bats

Example

Hitter with 90 singles, 35 doubles, 5 triples, 32 HR in 560 AB has total bases = 90 + 70 + 15 + 128 = 303. SLG = 303 ÷ 560 = .541.

Understanding Slugging Percentage

Slugging percentage gauges how dangerous a hitter is once they put the ball in play. Power hitters post high SLG scores by stacking extra-base hits, while speed-first players might register lower totals even with solid batting averages.

Benchmark Guide

  • > .600: MVP-level power
  • .500 – .599: Slugger
  • .425 – .499: Above average
  • .375 – .424: Average
  • < .375: Limited power

Improve Your SLG

  • Train for bat speed and launch angle to convert contact into extra-base hits.
  • Study pitchers to anticipate fastball counts for aggressive swings.
  • Focus on strength and mobility to maintain power deep into the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does slugging count walks?

No. Walks do not add total bases, so they are excluded from slugging percentage. Pair SLG with OBP to calculate OPS for a fuller picture.

Can SLG exceed 1.000?

Yes, in small samples. A player who hits two doubles in two at-bats has 4 total bases and SLG = 2.000. Over full seasons, SLG above 1.000 is nearly impossible.

How is SLG different from ISO?

Isolated Power (ISO) subtracts batting average from slugging (ISO = SLG − AVG). It measures pure extra-base hit rate, removing singles from the equation.

What if I only know total bases?

Divide total bases by at-bats directly. If you have hits breakdown, this calculator automatically totals bases for you.

Is slugging relevant in softball?

Absolutely. The same formula applies to fastpitch and slowpitch softball to evaluate hitting power.
